HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Former Southern Miss men's golfer Brice Wilkinson captured the 108th Mississippi State Amateur Championship in a sudden death playoff over Kye Meeks, Sunday afternoon, at Reunion Golf and Country Club in Madison.
Wilkinson, a native of Madison, Miss., shot a two-under 70 in each of his four rounds over the four-day event to end with an eight-under 280. On the opening hole of the playoff, Meeks (Walnut, Miss.) sailed a putt 10 feet past the hole on his par effort, while Wilkinson responded by burying a three-foot putt to win the event and earn a spot in the PGA Tour's Sanderson Farms Classic this fall, Sept. 29-Oct. 2, at the Country Club of Jackson.
"This is wild because it is my fourth day playing in a month," said Wilkinson, who played for the Golden Eagles from 2019-22. "I got in last minute and figured I had nothing to lose. I played like I normally do. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter, but I am happy with the way that I played and how everything turned out. I don't even know what to say about the Sanderson Farm exemption. It has been one of my dreams for a while to play in a PGA Tour event. To actually tee it up in that event at the Country Club of Jackson is going to be really something else."
Less than two weeks before the tournament, Wilkinson sat on the waiting list to get into the tournament but made his opportunity count when was given the opportunity.
Wilkinson graduated from Southern Miss in May and recently started law school at Mississippi College. He finished his Golden Eagle career with the lowest career of 72.30 spanning 77 rounds.
This is the fifth-straight year that a person associated with either the Southern Miss men's or women's golf program has captured a state amateur championship. Former Golden Eagle Matt Lorenz collected the 2018 Alabama Amateur State Championship, before Walker Kesterson won the 2019 Missouri Amateur event. Former women's golfer Julie Baker won the 2020 Alabama event and women's golf coach Lucy Nunn Burke has triumphed in the 2021 and 2022 Mississippi State Amateur events.
