RUSTON, La. -- The Southern Miss softball team fell to the LA Tech Lady Techsters in the second game of its final Conference USA series on Saturday. The Golden Eagles fell behind early and were unable to make up ground, as LA Tech clinched the series.
Hannah Borden now leads Southern Miss hitters in home runs, as the Trussville, Ala. native hit a solo shot to register her ninth homer of the season. Maria Smith and Jana Lee both recorded a pair of hits in the loss.Â
Smith registered the first hit of the game in the top of the first, and a passed ball moved her to scoring position. The Golden Eagles were unable to bring the Edwardsville, Ill. native in, as a groundout ended the top of the opening frame.
LA Tech opened the scoring with a single that brought in the first run of the game. The Lady Techsters loaded the bases and a grand slam off the bat of Madie Green gave LA Tech a 5-0 advantage. Paige Kilgore entered the circle in relief of Morgan Leinstock and guided Southern Miss out of the inning.Â
Neither team was able to generate runs in the second inning. Kilgore struck out a pair of batters in the bottom of the inning, as Southern Miss continued to trail by five runs.Â
A single from Destini Brown and a double from Smith, her second hit of the day, placed runners on second and third. The Golden Eagles were unable to chip away at LA Tech's lead in the top of the third, as a groundout and a flyout left two runners on base.Â
The Lady Techsters opened the bottom of the third with a leadoff double. However, Southern Miss shut the door, as the Golden Eagle defense sent LA Tech's next three batters back to the dugout.Â
LA Tech retired the first three batters of the fourth as the Golden Eagles were unable to register a hit. Southern Miss allowed another leadoff double but kept the Lady Techsters off the board in the bottom of the inning.Â
After a scoreless frame from the Golden Eagles, LA Tech extended its lead to six runs with a leadoff homer. Borden responded with a solo shot of her own, which marked the 100th hit of her career. Jana Lee recorded a triple moments later, but her squad was unable to bring her home as LA Tech led by five heading into the seventh.
The Black & Gold were unable to mount a comeback in the top of the seventh, as LA Tech clinched the series. The Golden Eagles fall to 20-33 against the Lady Techsters in the all-time series with the loss.Â
