RUSTON, La. -- The Southern Miss softball team fell in the final game of its regular season to LA Tech on Sunday. The Golden Eagles lead by four heading into the bottom of the seventh, but a rally by the Lady Techsters clinched the sweep for the home team, as Southern Miss fell by a score of 8-7.Â
Tata Davis, Destini Brown, Natalie Taylor and Jana Lee all recorded a pair of hits. Lee recorded a two-run homer and finished the regular season with five home runs, the most of any Southern Miss freshman.Â
The Black & Gold recorded 13 hits, compared to LA Tech's 5, but it was not enough to lift the Golden Eagles past the Lady Techsters.Â
The Golden Eagles opened the contest with a strong first frame, as Southern Miss jumped out to a three-run lead. After a single and stolen base from Brown, Davis drove her in with an RBI single for the opening run. Jana Lee then crushed a two-run homer to right field to give the Golden Eagles a 3-0 lead heading into the second inning.Â
After a scoreless top of the second for Southern Miss, LA Tech tied the contest following a solo home run and a pair of RBI singles and a pair of errors from the Golden Eagles. Paige Kilgore entered the game in relief of Jana Lee to see the Black & Gold out of the inning.
Southern Miss reclaimed the lead in the top of the third with a pair of crucial hits. Scout Jennings brought in Davis for her second run of the day with a single, and moments later, Natalie Taylor drove in Lee to take a two-run lead. The Golden Eagles left the bases loaded, but took a 5-3 lead into the fourth.
The Golden Eagles were unable to generate a hit in the top of the fourth. Southern Miss left a runner on base, as Hannah Borden was hit by a pitch. LA Tech put two runners on base in the bottom of the frame, but Kilgore and the Golden Eagle defense held strong to maintain a two-run lead.
Neither team could muster any offense in the fifth, as the Golden Eagles and Lady Techsters both went three up, three down. In the top of the sixth, a two-RBI double from Borden brought Davis and Taylor home to increase Southern Miss' advantage to five runs.Â
LA Tech trimmed the Golden Eagles' lead to three as a stolen third base followed by a throwing error brought in a run. The Lady Techsters loaded the bases with one away, as Morgan Leinstock entered the contest to attempt a save. A three-run triple sealed the walk-off win for the Lady Techsters, as the Golden Eagles fell to 20-33 against LA Tech in the all-time series.Â
