RUSTON, La. -- Morgan Leinstock recorded eight strikeouts and did not allow an earned run in the opening contest of a Conference USA series against LA Tech. However, an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth inning gave the Lady Techsters a 1-0 victory over the Southern Miss softball team on Friday night.
Leinstock pitched the 23rd complete game of her season, as the Scottsdale, Ariz. native held LA Tech scoreless through five frames. Five different Golden Eagles recorded hits, as Southern Miss matched LA Tech's hit totals, as both teams finished the game with five.
The Golden Eagles were unable to put place a runner on base in the first, as a pair of strikeouts and a flyout ended the top of the opening frame. LA Tech loaded the bases with one out on the board in the bottom of the inning. Southern Miss escaped the jam, as an unassisted double play from freshman first baseman Natalie Taylor kept the game scoreless.
Southern Miss was unable to solve LA Tech pitcher, Audrey Pickett, in the top of the second, as a groundout and two strikeouts brought the Lady Techsters up to hit. Leinstock recorded a trio of strikeouts in the bottom of the inning, as neither team could break the scoreless tie.
Taylor recorded the first hit of the afternoon for the Golden Eagles in the top of the third, but the Golden Eagles were unable to bring her home. Two groundouts and pop up sent LA Tech's first three batters of the inning back to the dugout in the bottom of the third.Â
Leinstock recorded three strikeouts once again in the bottom of the fourth, as the contest remained scoreless after four innings. The Lady Techsters sent the Golden Eagles' first three batters of the fifth back, as Southern Miss was unable to register a hit.
Lorna Agren entered the contest as a pinch hitter in the top of the sixth. The freshman recorded Southern Miss' second hit of the afternoon, a single up to center field. Maria Smith laid down a gorgeous bunt to place runners on first and second with one out on the board. However, Southern Miss was unable to bring either runner in, as the game remained tied.
LA Tech put runners on first and third, following a double and a bunt single from the Lady Techsters. A sacrifice fly brought in the first run of the contest, as LA Tech took a 1-0 lead into the top of the seventh.
A single from Jana Lee with a full count led the Golden Eagles off in the top of the seventh, and Columbia Holeman entered the game as a pinch runner. Scout Jennings picked up a single to put runners on first and second with none away. A sacrifice bunt from Alexis Dittmer places runners on second a third.
A fielder's choice stopped Holeman from tying the game, and a strikeout closed the contest, as LA Tech took the one-run game. Southern Miss fell to 20-32 against the Lady Techsters in the all-time series with the loss.Â
