Beach Volleyball Inks Five in 2022 Signing Class
5/26/2022 11:59:00 AM | Beach Volleyball
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss head coach Shawn Taylor has announced five additions for the upcoming 2023 season.
Â
Christian Mitchell (Dallas), Morgan Perry (Baton Rouge, La.), Ella Rodriguez (Chesterton, Ind.), Ashlyn Rough (Phoenix) and Mara Schmidt (Holmen, Wisc.) look to bolster a Golden Eagle squad fresh off its Conference USA debut.
Â
"We are excited about the addition of these five ladies," said Taylor. "It was a really tough class to recruit for on multiple factors. A couple committed at the onset of COVID but we had to hit the pause button as we waited to see how our current roster would shake out.
Â
At the same time, we didn't want to recruit an entire class without getting to spend time with these young women and their families. Fortunately, the NCAA lifted the dead period, and we were able to get back on the road and finish out the 2022 signing class.
Â
Each player brings something unique with them. Some are heavily experienced in beach volleyball, while others are newer to the game. Nonetheless, we feel all are outstanding people and students with a passion for the game, our program and Southern Miss."
Â
The 2022Â class consists of record-setting high school seniors from three states previously untapped by Southern Miss recruiting.
Â
Christian Mitchell | Dallas | McKinney High School
Christian Mitchell, a native of Dallas, prepped at McKinney High School (McKinney, Texas), lettering in Indoor Volleyball in the 2019 and 2020 seasons. The Lions finished 12-19 in 2020 overall as Mitchell recorded 28 sets of action as a sophomore setter.
Â
Mitchell also played with club indoor teams for three years before moving to sand full time.
Â
Mitchell enjoyed tremendous success at the national club level with her most successful season coming in 2019 at the AAU 14U Beach Volleyball Championships. She and her partner placed third overall out of 80 qualified teams. Most impressively, this bronze medal finish was her first time playing the California tournament.
Â
She followed up these top performances by placing third overall in the California Beach Volleyball Association 18U Junior Championships. In the CBVA Adult division, she finished 25th overall.
Â
In the 2020 season, she finished second in the 18U USA Volleyball North Texas bid tournament. In the same season, she went on to place fifth in two 18U showcases. Â
Notably, while participating in club play, Mitchell paired with current Golden Eagles Reagan Sandlin and Madison Cassidy.
Â
Last winter, Mitchell was selected as a member of the USA Volleyball 19U Beach Winter Training Team. Mitchell was one of few players from across the country to be selected for training in Manhattan Beach, Calif.
Â
By being named to this team, Mitchell was recognized as one of the top players in the nation. The team consisted of top prospects selected by the National Team Development Program's scouts. The NTDP scouting staff consists of top coaches from all states coaching both indoor and beach at all levels of the game.
Â
Mitchell becomes both the fifth player from the Lone Star State and Dallas Metroplex, joining current Golden Eagle Reagan Sandlin as the only active Texas natives.
Â
Mitchell verbally committed to Southern Miss on July 28, 2020.

She is the daughter of William and Jennifer Mitchell. Dad, William, played tennis at Texas State.

Â
The Trojans' 2021 season came to an end against Crown Point in sectionals of the 4A Indiana High School Athletic Association Volleyball Tournament.
Â
While a seasoned veteran on the court, Rodriguez is a newcomer to beach volleyball. Her first time in the sand was just last summer while she was looking to find a new love of the game she had known for so long.
Â
During her first tournament in Pompano Beach, Fla., Rodriguez connected with Shawn Taylor, and, after inviting Coach Taylor to her next match, received an offer from the Black & Gold's head man.
