Gabe Montenegro, Will McGillis Make C-USA All-Academic Team

HATTIESBURG, Miss – Two Southern Miss baseball players, outfielder Gabe Montenegro and second baseman Will McGillis, were named to the Conference USA All-Academic team Monday afternoon.
Montenegro, from Guatemala City, Guatemala, earned Present's List twice (4.00 GPA) and the Athletic Director's Honor Roll nine times in his career as well as picking up two C-USA Academic Medal and five C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll. Gabe graduated this spring
In five seasons on the field, Montenegro has etched his named in the Golden Eagle career record books including first in games played (249) and at bats (980), second in hits (309) and singles (233), third in runs (207), fifth in walks (126), ninth in total bases (422) and tied for ninth in triples (9).
Montenegro has started and played in 53 games this season, missing two after being hit by pitch in the face during the middle of the season. He is hitting .282 with eight doubles, two triples, one home run and 30 RBI. His only home run was a three-run shot against New Orleans in which his blast gave the Golden Eagles a lead that they did not relinquish. Montenegro has 18 multi-hit games and eight multi-RBI contests to his credit this season. In addition, he has 18, 2-out RBI which ranks second on team and at one point enjoyed a nine-game hitting streak.
McGillis has started every game this season at second base for the Golden Eagles. During his tenure, McGillis has earned four President's List and four Dean's List honors, as well as one Athletic Director's Honor Roll. In addition, he holds five C-USA Academic Medals and was on the C-USA Commissioner's List five times. He currently resides in the MBA program at Southern Miss.
Prior to the season, he was voted as one of three team captains. His statistics include hitting .279 with 15 home runs and 48 RBI to go along with 12 doubles and two triples. McGillis has also been hit by a pitch a team-leading 17 times. During the team, he hit the go-ahead home run in the 13th against Charlotte and is tied for second on the squad with 18, 2-out RBI. From San Diego, Calif., McGillis has 13 multi-hit games and 13 multi-RBI affairs.
