DALLAS --Â Southern Miss women's golfer Elena Melich was named Conference USA Co-Freshman of the Year on Monday, as announced by the conference office.
Melich appeared in all 10 tournaments and averaged 75.62 strokes per round. Her single-season stroke average ranks 10thall-time in program history. The Guadalajara, Spain native enjoyed a top-10 finish at the Lady Red Wolves Classic to help the Golden Eagles to a third-place finish in the team race. Melich's best round was a three-under par 69 at the MountainView Collegiate and was one of her seven rounds under par this season.
"We are incredibly proud of Elena and the hard work she has put in this year," said head coach Lucy Nunn Burke. "Freshman year is always an adjustment, and Elena was able to adapt quickly and embrace everything that was thrown her way.Â
"Merche set the standard being our first C-USA Freshman of the Year in 2021 and it's the mark of this team that they continuously push each other to be better. I can't wait to see what year two brings for Elena and what great things this group will do together."
Melich fired a 54-hole total of 213 at the MountainView Collegiate to finish tied for 18thand record the third-lowest 54-hole total in program history. It was the lowest three-day tournament total by a Golden Eagle since Nichada Satasuk fired a 211 at the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate in 2017.
Southern Miss has now claimed the last two C-USA Freshman of the Year awards after Merche Corbacho took home the honors last season. Melich shares Co-Freshman of the Year honors with FIU's Karissa Kilby.
