
Softball Falls to WKU in Series Finale

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss softball team fell to WKU in the final game of the Conference USA series on Sunday. The Golden Eagles were unable to generate offense throughout the contest and were defeated by the Hilltoppers by a score of 4-0.
Morgan Leinstock and Paige Kilgore shared the load in the circle on Sunday. Kilgore allowed just one hit and pitched 2.1 scoreless frames for the Black & Gold, while Maria Smith, Tata Davis, Jana Lee and Scout Jennings recorded hits for the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles and Hilltoppers were unable to generate offense in the first, as both teams went three up, three down to open the game. Destini Brown hit a ball that was tracking over the fence for a solo home run, but her ninth homer of the year was taken away by a solid play from WKU's centerfielder, Brylee Hage.
The Tops posted their first hit of the afternoon in the top of the second, but a double play from the Golden Eagles ended the frame. Southern Miss placed runners on first and second following a walk for Jana Lee and a single from Scout Jennings with one away. However, a pair of strikeouts ended the inning as the game remained scoreless.
After a scoreless third frame, the Tops placed runners on first and second following a single and an error. WKU opened the scoring following an RBI single and a sacrifice fly, as the Hilltoppers took a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth.Â
The Golden Eagles were unable to respond in the bottom of the fourth, and the Tops placed runners on first and second to open the fifth. After a strikeout, WKU loaded the bases with one out on the board. The Tops brought in another pair of runs to take a 4-0 lead and the Golden Eagles could not respond in the bottom of the frame.Â
In the top of the seventh, Davis made a spectacular diving catch to close out the top of the inning. The Golden Eagles were unable to respond in the bottom of the inning, as WKU claimed the final game of the series. Following the series victory, Southern Miss trails the Tops in the all-time series 5-9.
