Three Golden Eagles Finish in First at Joe May Invitational

BATON ROUGE, La. -- The Southern Miss track and field team secured three victories on Saturday at the Joe May Invitational in Baton Rouge, La.
"We were a little flat this weekend after a great meet at home last weekend," said head coach Jon Stuart. "Some good training this next week will get us back on track. I am excited about Sandra Szpott breaking the 800m school record."
Corvell Todd was the first Golden Eagle to make the top of the podium after handily winning the high jump contest with a final jump of 2.22m. Todd's mark was a meet record.
Sandra Szpott's first-place finish in the 800m dash set a meet record, personal record, and school record that stood since 2005. Szpott's clocked in at 2:07.72 and was followed by teammate Smilla Kolbe in second place. Kolbe's 2:08.13 time puts her in third on the all-time 800m dash list behind Szpott and Danija Kojic.
The Black and Golden secured another top-two finish when Carlin Beal and Rebecca DeKay were the first two to cross the finish line in the 3000m dash. Beal and DeKay both set personal marks in the race, while Beal finished with a time of 10:15.30. DeKay finished in second at 10:18.00.
Running the 1500m for the first time, Oliwia Wawrzyniak took home second place in a meet record 4:36.70. Wawrzyniak broke the meet record by nearly four seconds.
Arianna White took home fourth in the javelin throw and her 43.47m throw was a meet record. Landon Charles also finished in fourth in the men's 400m hurdles.
Joe Wager took home a third-place finish on a 48.52m throw in the men's discus event. Fred Moudani finished in fourth in the men's shot put with a 18.18m throw.
Marquasha Myers jumped 12.57m in the women's triple jump to finish in second.
Southern Miss will head to the War Eagle Invitational next weekend in Auburn, Ala. The two-day event will start on Friday and run through Saturday afternoon.
