Softball Falls to Charlotte, 9-1

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Southern Miss softball team fell to the Charlotte 49ers, 9-1 in the second game of the series. An eight-run inning from Charlotte in the fourth could not be overcome by Southern Miss on Saturday afternoon.
Jana Lee pitched 3.2 innings in the circle for Southern Miss, while graduate outfielder Destini Brown picked up the Golden Eagles' lone run in the top of the first. Southern Miss (22-16, 2-9 C-USA) is now 1-1 with Charlotte through the first two contests of the Conference USA series.
The Golden Eagles struck first, as wild pitch brought Brown home from third for her 39th run of the season. Southern Miss led, 1-0 after the first frame, as the Golden Eagles kept the 49ers off the board in the bottom of the inning.
Neither team could generate offense in the second, as both the Golden Eagles and 49ers went three up, three down to end the inning. Southern Miss was unable to record a hit in the top of the third and led 1-0 heading into the bottom of the third.
Charlotte tied the contest with a solo home run in the bottom of the third. The Golden Eagles were held off the board in the top of the fourth, and ther 49ers tacked on eight runs to take a 9-1 in the bottom of the fourth. Paige Kilgore entered the circle in relief of Jana Lee and got Southern Miss out of the inning.
The 49ers closed out the contest, as a groundout and a pair of strikeouts in the top of the fifth spelled the end of the game. The Black & Gold were outhit by the 49ers, 11-2 through the five-inning tilt. Southern Miss fell to 17-8 against Charlotte in the all-time series against Charlotte.Â

The Golden Eagles are back in action tomorrow at 11 a.m. in Charlotte. Southern Miss has a chance to take the series from the 49ers in the final game of the series, which will be streamed on ESPN+.
