Golden Eagles Finish Weather-Shortened First Round in Kentucky

MURRAY, Ky. --Â Due to inclement weather in the area, the first day off the Jan Weaver Invitational was condensed into a single 18-hole round instead of the planned 36 holes. The Southern Miss women's golf team is in ninth at Miller Memorial Golf Course after firing a 325.Â
Freshman Elena Melich was the highest Golden Eagle finisher, tying for 20th with an eight-over 80. Melich, who started on hole six, shot par on 10 of the first 13 holes before recording double bogeys on the first and fifth hole. Fellow freshman Momoka Ando finished one behind Melich with a nine-over 81. Ando went bogey free on nine of the first 12 holes and is tied for 24th.Â
Junior Friend Chompitakdacha and freshman Jacee Fields both fired a 10-over 82 to finish day one tied for 29th. Merche Corbacho shot a 14-over 86 and is tied for 47th.Â
Samford sits in first place finishing 21-over as a team and is three strokes ahead of North Carolina A&T and Evansville. Samford's Sophie Membrino leads the 63-player field after finishing with a one-over 73.Â
Southern Miss will tee off in the final round on Saturday morning with an 10:00 a.m. shotgun start. The tournament will be Southern Miss' first 36-hole tournament of the season.Â
