HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss men's golf team ended its Conference USA Championship bid in the semifinal round by falling to UTSA 4-1 in Match Play Thursday morning at the Texarkana Country Club in Texarkana, Ark.
"This team has been monumental in the progress of Southern Miss Golf," said Golden Eagle coach Eddie Brescher. "Every day they came to practice ready to work. Unfortunately, we came up short of a conference championship, but the future looks brighter than ever. We will dearly miss our seniors and the mark they left on the program is more than a coach could have ever asked for. Watch out for the Eagles next year and beyond."
Sophomore Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) captured the only victory by defeating UTSA's Christian Fanfelle 5-and-4. Latter won the first hole on No. 10 and then captured back-to-back points on both No. 14 and No. 15 to go up three. He also added consecutive hole victories on the front nine at No. 3 and No. 4, before tying on the next hole to collect the victory.
Senior Hunter Atkins (West Point, Miss.) and Roadrunner Hunter Bolt tied over the first six holes, but Holt won three of the next six holes to win 3-and-2.
Golden Eagle sophomore Thongpipat Rattanayanon (Bangkok, Thailand) jumped out to an early lead on Jack Wehman, but the Roadrunner won at hole No. 16 and No. 17 to capture the match 3-and-2.
Both senior Brice Wilkinson (Madison, Miss.) and freshman Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.) were defeated in their respective matches. Wilkinson fell to Michael Rome 5-and-4 while Dupuy lost his match to David Harrison 6-and-4.
The Golden Eagles reached Match Play for only the second time in the league's seven-year history in using this format for determining a team champion.
