HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Seniors Brice Wilkinson (Madison, Miss.) and Hunter Atkins (West Point, Miss.), along with sophomore Thongpipat Rattanayanon (Bangkok Thailand), each shot an even par 72 over the final day of stroke play at the Conference USA Championship in Texarkana, Ark., to help Southern Miss place second in the event and advance to Match Play.
The second place showing allows the Golden Eagles in being one of four teams to advance to Match Play Thursday at the par 72, 6,969-yard Texarkana Country Club. Florida Atlantic finished first at five-under 859, bettering the Golden Eagles by one stroke at 860. UTSA came in third at four-over 868 and Charlotte came in fourth at a six-over 870.
"This week was filled with a great performance from our team in stroke play," said Southern Miss men's golf coach Eddie Brescher. "Once again, our guys fed off each other and picked each other up when someone was having an off day. I am very proud of the poise and calm our team showed coming down the stretch."
With his final round total, Wilkinson posted a one-under 215 in the event to place tied for seventh. Atkins carded a three-round, even par 216 to tied for 11th, while sophomore Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) added a 73 to end his tournament with a 217 and in a 13th-place tie.
After tying his lowest round of the event over the final 18 holes, Rattanayanon ended with a 220 and a 26th-place tie, while freshman Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.) ended his stroke portion of the tournament with a round of 78 to total 221 strokes and in a 31st-place tie.
The No. 2 seed Golden Eagles will now meet No. 3 UTSA in the semifinal round of Match Play, while No. 1 Florida Atlantic will take on No. 4 Charlotte. Both matches will start Thursday at 8 a.m. The Golden Eagles will tee off on hole No. 10. The winner of those two matches will meet in the finals later in the day.
"Making match play is a great achievement," said Brescher "However, we have two matches to play to get to where we want to be. We welcome the challenge and will not take our opponents lightly. Match play is the most electric format in college golf and our boys are fired up for it."
This is the second time in six C-USA events that the Golden Eagles have earned a spot in Match Play. The other time came in 2017 and the squad dropped a 4-1 score to top-seed UTEP that year in the semifinals.
