HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss right-hander Tanner Hall collected his second Conference USA Pitcher of the Week honors Monday after his stellar performance last Friday night at home against league foe Rice.
The sophomore from Zachary, La., improved his season record to 7-0 after he limited the Owls to three hits, a walk and a hit by pitch over eight innings in a 1-0 victory.
His 103-pitch outing, with 74 strikes, established a career high as he also tied career bests in innings and strikeouts with 13. Hall fanned the first seven batters he faced to start the game. It also was the third time this season he fanned 13 in a game.
The only threat for the Owls against Hall came in the fourth. After a two-out double, Hall gave up a single to right but the runner trying to score on the play was called out at the plate. That was the only runner he let get past second base in the contest.
With his 13 strikeouts, Hall now has 90 on the year with just seven walks. Through Sunday's games, Hall ranked No. 4 nationally in strikeout-to-walk ratio (12.86), No. 9 in walks per nine innings (0.97) and strikeout total, and No. 12 in both victories and WHIP (0.86).
This is the fourth time this season a Southern Miss pitcher has collected this honor with Hurston Waldrep earning the other two.
Hall also garnered a National Player of the Week nod by the publication Collegiate Baseball.
The Golden Eagles (32-8) return to action Tuesday when they travel to Hammond, La., for a contest against Southeastern Louisiana. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
