SAN ANTONIO -- The Southern Miss softball team fell in the series finale to the UTSA Roadrunners on Sunday afternoon. Natalie Hurdle recorded the first home run of her collegiate career, but it would not be enough to lift the Golden Eagles to victory, as UTSA took the contest by a score of 6-3 and claimed the series.Â
Southern Miss (27-18, 7-11 C-USA) fell behind early and was unable to take a lead at any point in the afternoon. The Golden Eagles managed to rack up nine hits, compared to the Roadrunners' 10, but could not take advantage of opportunities, including a pair of errors from UTSA.Â
UTSA got off to a hot start, as a grand slam in the bottom of the first helped the Roadrunners jump ahead early. Paige Kilgore entered the contest in relief to get the Golden Eagles out of the inning.
Southern Miss chipped away at the Roadrunner lead in the second and third. Lexie Smith drove in Scout Jennings in the second, and Davis brought Natalie Hurdle home on a fielder's choice to trim UTSA's advantage to two heading into the fourth.
The Roadrunners tacked on another run with a solo shot in the bottom of the fourth to extend Southern Miss' deficit to 5-2. The Golden Eagles picked up a pair of hits in the top of the fifth but failed to bring either runner home as UTSA's three-run lead remained intact.Â
Hurdle sent a solo shot over the fence to cut UTSA's advantage to two in the top of the sixth. However, the Roadrunners added on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to regain the three-score lead.
Southern Miss was blanked in the final frame, as UTSA claimed the series, 2-1. The Golden Eagles fell to 18-13 all-time against the Roadrunners.
