STARKVILLE, Miss. -- The Southern Miss softball team fell in a midweek contest to the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Wednesday night. A home run from Destini Brown and two runs batted in from Jana Lee could not lift the Golden Eagles to victory over the Bulldogs, as Southern Miss fell by a score of 5-4.
Southern Miss (27-19, 7-11 C-USA) received a strong outing from Brown, as she went 3-5 on the day, as she collected her eighth home run of the 2022 season. Morgan Leinstock pitched a complete game in the circle, as the Golden Eagles end the home-and-home against Mississippi State with a 1-1 record.Â
Maria Smith and Tata Davis placed themselves on first and second following a walk and a single. The Golden Eagles brought both home moments later, as a pair of singles from Scout Jennings and Jana Lee brought Smith and Davis home to give Southern Miss an early 2-0 lead.Â
Leinstock and Southern Miss' defense held strong in the bottom of the opening frame, as a strikeout, a flyout and a groundout sent Mississippi State's first three batters back to the dugout.Â
Brown recorded her eighth home run of the season in the top of the second, as the McComb, Miss. native crushed a solo shot over the scoreboard to left field. However, Mississippi State erased Southern Miss' lead with a three-run homer in the bottom of the inning.Â
Southern Miss loaded the bases in the top of the third with just one out on the board. However, a fielder's choice and a strikeout from the Bulldogs kept the Golden Eagles from reclaiming the lead. The Bulldogs tacked on two runs in the bottom of the inning after a two-RBI ground-rule double to take a 5-3 lead.
The Golden Eagles once again loaded the bases in the top of the fourth. Lee brought Brown home for her second RBI of the evening, but Maria Smith was called out at home, which ended the frame. Southern Miss held the Bulldogs off the board in the bottom of the inning but trailed by one heading into the fifth.
With two outs on the board, Natalie Hurdle and Brown both recorded singles in the top of the fifth. The Golden Eagles were unable to bring them home, as the score remained 5-4 heading into the sixth.Â
Southern Miss received a double from Hannah Borden and a single from Jennings in the sixth. The Black & Gold were unable to tie the game but held Mississippi State off the board in the bottom of the sixth.
The Golden Eagles were unable to find an equalizing run, falling by one run for the fifth time this season. The Black & Gold fell to 13-40 against Mississippi State in the all-time series.
