HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss men's golf team travels to Texarkana, Ark., to compete in the 54-hole Conference USA Championship set to take place at the Texarkana Country Club.
The 13-team field starts at 8 a.m., Monday and will play 18 holes each day through Wednesday in the event. The top four teams will then advance to match play on Thursday with semifinals, followed by a finals match to determine the team champion.
The Golden Eagles finished in the Top 5 as a team in five of their 10 tournaments during the year, including a team championship in the ECU Invitational.
"Our guys have played some great golf this season," said Southern Miss coach Eddie Brescher. "Mossy Oak, which was our last tournament, was simply not our week. However, our team is confident in their abilities, and we have proven multiple times we can compete with anyone in the nation."
The Golden Eagles will utilize the team of senior Brice Wilkinson (Madison, Miss.), sophomore Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario), senior Hunter Atkins (West Point, Miss.), Thongpipat Rattanayanon (Bangkok, Thailand) and freshman Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.). Sophomore Warwick Purchase (Pretoria, South Africa) will serve as the team's alternate player for the event.
Seven teams rank in the Top 100 in the latest Golfstat weekly rankings, including No. 28 Charlotte, No. 54 UAB, No. 71 Middle Tennessee, No. 77 Florida Atlantic, No. 80 UTSA, No. 82 North Texas and No. 83 Southern Miss.
The par-72, 6,969-yard course serves as the championship course for the seven-straight year, not counting 2020 when a tournament was not held due to COVID-19.
"Texarkana Country Club is very similar to our home course," said Brescher. "A lot of doglegs, tree-lined fairways, and a lot of wedges to tucked hole locations. We put an emphasis on our short game this week at practice and hope that will pay off. We have a ton of depth in our travel team this week. Our conference has always been a strong golf conference. We know this week will require good golf to advance. We welcome the challenge."
