Southern Miss (27-17, 7-10 C-USA) trailed throughout most of the contest, but the Golden Eagles recorded 15 runs in the seventh and eighth inning to push past the Roadrunners in an offensive showdown. The Black & Gold recorded 20 runs for the first time since Feb. 22, 2020.
The Golden Eagles received multi-hit performances from five different student-athletes, including five from Davis and four from Borden. Southern Miss and UTSA combined for 33 hits and seven home runs.
The Black & Gold trailed by seven in the top of the seventh, but a momentous comeback, led by Davis' grand slam gave Southern Miss a 13-12 lead. UTSA tied the contest and sent the game to extra innings, but a seven-run outburst from the Golden Eagles sealed their seventh C-USA win of the season.Â
"When we were down 12-5 in the seventh and we made that comeback, I had already made up my mind that I was proud of them," head coach Brian Levin said. "They had no quit in them and they just kept going. When you have that resiliency and desire to never give in, great things are going to happen."
The Golden Eagles got off to a strong start in the top of the first. Scout Jennings got the scoring started for Southern Miss, as a single brought Davis home. Moments later, Jana Lee sent Borden in to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead. The Black & Gold recorded four hits in the opening frame and left two runners on base.
The Roadrunners struck back in the bottom of the inning with a barrage of offense. UTSA recorded a three-run homer, along with four more runs, to take a 7-2 lead on the Golden Eagles after the first frame.Â
Southern Miss chipped away at UTSA's lead, as a Maria Smith single brought in Destini Brown to cut the Roadrunner lead to four. The Golden Eagles recorded two hits but left a runner on base as UTSA led by a score of 7-3.Â
Another three-run shot from the Roadrunners extended Southern Miss' deficit to seven after the third frame. Southern Miss was blanked for the second-straight inning in the top of the fourth, and UTSA held a 10-3 advantage.Â
A solo shot gave UTSA an 11-3 lead after four frames, but Borden responded with a two-run shot to center. The Trussville, Ala. native brought Davis home, as the Golden Eagles trimmed the Roadrunner lead to five.
"If that inning would've ended, it would've been ballgame. So I just needed to stay within myself," Borden said of her first home run. "I knew I couldn't end it with one swing and I just tried to do my job. It worked and we stayed in it and got the win."
The Roadrunners extended their lead to seven in the bottom of the sixth with their fourth home run of the afternoon. The Golden Eagles chipped away at the Roadrunner lead in the top of the seventh, as a walk brought in a runner with the bases loaded and Brown cut UTSA's advantage to three with a two-RBI single.
Davis recorded her fifth hit of the afternoon and second home run of the series to give the Golden Eagles their first lead since the first. The Philadelphia native crushed a grand slam over the left field wall to put Southern Miss on top, 13-12.
"I knew we needed to come back as a team," Davis said. "The whole game was up and down and we said in the huddle that all we had to do was pass the bat around. That swing felt really good, I knew it was gone off the bat."
UTSA tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, but the Golden Eagles would not be denied in the top of the eighth. A pair of RBI singles from Natalie Taylor and Brown gave Southern Miss a 15-13 lead. Both Taylor and Brown reached home on a wild pitch to extend the lead to five moments later.
Borden put the exclamation point on Southern Miss' comeback with a three-run homer to extend the lead to seven. The Golden Eagles shut down the Roadrunners in the bottom of the seventh to improve to 18-12 in the all-time series against UTSA.
