SAN ANTONIO -- Tata Davis made history Friday evening, as the graduate second baseman entered the record books as Southern Miss' most prolific hitter. Davis recorded three hits to claim the all-time hits record for the program in a 5-3 loss to the UTSA Roadrunners.
The Golden Eagles (26-17, 6-10 C-USA) received three hits from Davis and a pair from Scout Jennings, but could not overcome an early surge from UTSA. Both Davis and Jennings recorded home runs for the Black & Gold in the loss.Â
Davis' final hit of the day in the seventh inning, a two-run shot to left field, gave the Philadelphia, Miss. native her 206th-career hit to clinch the record. Southern Miss matched the Roadrunners offensively, as both teams put up nine hits.
"If you were going to build a Mount Rushmore for Southern Miss softball, Tata (Davis) would be on it, along with Destini (Brown)," head coach Brian Levin said. "She's a key, vital figure for our program. There's not anyone more deserving than her; she's just a good player and a good person."
In the top of the first, Davis picked up a single, but the Golden Eagles could not bring her in. UTSA put a runner on base following a fielding error, but the contest remained scoreless after the first frame.
The Roadrunners struck first in the bottom of the second, as a solo home run gave UTSA a 1-0 lead. Davis tied the program record for career hits in the top of the third, but once again, the Golden Eagles left her on base. UTSA tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 4-0 lead.
Jennings recorded the third homer of her career in the top of the fourth; a solo shot to dead center, to cut UTSA's lead to three. Paige Kilgore took over for Leinstock in the bottom of the fourth and kept the Roadrunners off the board.
After a scoreless frame from Southern Miss, UTSA recorded the second home run of its evening, a solo shot to reclaim a four-run lead in the bottom of the fifth.
The Golden Eagles loaded the bases with just one out in the top of the sixth inning. However, a double play from UTSA kept Southern Miss off the board.Â
Brown reached first on a single, and Davis was brought to the plate with one away in the top of the seventh. She etched her name into the record books with a two-run shot to take sole ownership of the Southern Miss hits record and to trim UTSA's lead to two.
"I had envisioned, 'I'm going to break this record with a home run,'" Davis said. "That's exactly what I did. It feels great to have this achievement, but I just wanted to do my job for the team."
The Roadrunners held on, as the Golden Eagles' four-game win streak was halted. Leinstock fell to 17-7 on the season, and Southern Miss fell to 17-12 against UTSA in the all-time series.Â
