NORFOLK, Va. -- The Southern Miss men's tennis team fell in the first round of the Conference USA Championships to No. 43 FAU on Friday morning. The second-seeded Owls shutout the seventh-seeded Golden Eagles, 4-0 on the campus of Old Dominion.
"We had our chances today, but FAU is a great team that came ready to play," said head coach Zubin Engineer. "I am really proud of the way our guys fought all season long. I think we'll return some key contributors next season that will put us in a great position to succeed early in the season."
FAU jumped to an early lead after taking the first two doubles matches to clinch the doubles point. Despite the point being clinched, Pasawee Reansuwong and Dhruv Sunish closed out their match with a 6-4 win on court three against Finn Stodder and Alvaro Fernandez Horta. The Golden Eagle duo closed out the 2022 campaign with a 6-3 record as a pair.
The Owls increased their lead when Gerard Escandell beat Alexander Gima, 6-1, 6-4 on court five. FAU's lead was then extended to three when Shamirul Shahril lost in a second-set tiebreaker to fall in straight sets. Nicolas Jadoun clinched the opening-round win for FAU with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) win against Antoine Audrain on court four.
Christopher Cahour went unfinished on court six after winning the first set, while Olimjon Nabiev and Sunish went unfinished after dropping the first set of their respective matches. FAU now moves on to face Charlotte on Saturday morning. Southern Miss ends the season with a 9-10 mark and will return its entire lineup outside of Sunish. Nabiev and Shahril finished with a team-leading nine wins, while Audrain and Cahour each had seven.
