Golden Eagles Remain in Fifth After Two Rounds at C-USA Championships

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. --Â For the second consecutive season, the Southern Miss women's golf team sits in fifth after the second round of the Conference USA Championships at PGA National Resort. Merche Corbacho fired a four-over 76 to remain in fifth on the individual leaderboard.Â
Corbacho battled a tough start before bouncing back to birdie four holes after starting six-over par through five holes. The freshman was sitting at two-over par after the 13th hole before bogeying two holes down the stretch to finish four-over par. Fellow freshman Momoka Ando moved into a tie for 15th after recording an eight-over 80 on Tuesday.Â
Elena Melich jumped up 15 spots into a tie for 21st thanks to a five-over 77 and two birdies. Melich's 77 matches Ando's first-round 77 as the third-lowest score by a Golden Eagle at the tournament so far -- Corbacho owns the two low rounds. Friend Chompitakdacha recorded a nine-over 81 and is in 34th. Jacee Fields had one birdie during her round and is in 52nd after 36 holes.Â
The Golden Eagles will start the final round 12 shots behind the leader and two shots behind FIU in fourth. UTSA holds a two-stroke lead over North Texas and a three-stroke lead over FAU. Fields will be the first Golden Eagle off the tee box at 7:50 a.m. Wednesday morning.Â
