Southern Miss Finishes Season with Second-Round Loss to FAU

FRISCO, Texas --Â Following an 86-59 loss to FAU (19-13, 11-7 C-USA) on Wednesday night in the second round of the Conference USA Tournament, Southern Miss' (7-26, 1-17 C-USA) 2021-22 men's basketball season came to a close.
Walyn Napper poured in a team-high 17 points to finish in double-digits for the sixth consecutive game. Tyler Stevenson capped an impressive junior campaign with a 10-point performance to move into a tie with Kenny Siler (1983-87) for 26th on the Southern Miss all-time scoring list with 1,203 points -- 405 of those points came this season.
FAU erupted in the second half for 51 points to break its single-season points total, and opened the second half shooting 14-of-18 from the floor over the first 10 minutes. The Owls pushed a six-point halftime lead to 15, then pushed it to 29 points with 6:50 to play in the contest.

Although the Black and Gold lost by 27 when all was said and done, they held the lead in the first half for nearly 10 minutes after FAU scored the opening basket of the game. Napper drained a tough shot following a pair of DeAndre Pinckney free throws to give Southern Miss a five-point lead seven minutes into the game, which ended up being its largest lead of the game. Pinckney finished with 13 points and seven rebounds. Rashad Bolden finished his freshman campaign with an eight-point output and grabbed three rebounds. Denijay Harris and Jeffery Armstrong each scored three points to go along with five from Jaron Pierre, Jr.
FAU finished the game shooting 58.6 percent from the floor and connected on 11 of its 25 three-point attempts. On the other hand, Southern Miss shot 35.6 percent from the floor and made only four of its 15 three-point attempts. FAU now moves to the quarterfinal round to play UAB on Thursday night.
