
Golden Eagles Walk-Off Against Albany to Sweep Weekend in Madeira Beach

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. -- The Southern Miss softball team prevailed in its first extra inning contest of 2022, as the Golden Eagles capped off a successful trip to Florida with a 5-4 win over Albany on Sunday. The Black & Gold finish the week undefeated, having won all six games in the Sunshine State.
Graduate student Destini Brown collected her 99th stolen base of her collegiate career and finished the contest with two hits, two runs scored and an RBI. Freshman Jana Lee came through with a walk-off double in the bottom of the eighth inning to extend Southern Miss' (17-5, 0-0 C-USA) win streak to six games.
Morgan Leinstock pitched her fourth complete game of the week, improving to 10-1 in the circle for the Golden Eagles. The Scottsdale, Ariz. native struck out 12 batters, the second most in a single game in her career. Southern Miss improved to 5-0 in neutral site contests and 8-0 outside of Hattiesburg.
The Golden Eagles started the game strong, as Brown nabbed a stolen base and reached home on a groundout from Tata Davis. Leinstock stuck out all three batters Albany sent up in th top of the second, and recorded sent the next three Great Danes she saw back in the top of the third.
Davis picked up her second RBI of the game in the third inning, as a double to center field brought Brown home for her second run of contest to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead.
The Great Danes responded with three runs over the course of the fifth and sixth innings, as Albany grabbed its first lead of the game heading into the bottom of the sixth.
A single from Brown in the bottom of the sixth brought Natalie Hurdle home to tie the game, and a throwing error from Albany allowed Maria Smith to dash home to take the 4-3 lead heading into the top of the seventh.Â
An RBI single in the top of the seventh from the Great Danes forced extra innings, as Albany and Southern Miss entered the eighth inning knotted up at 4-4. Leinstock took care of business in the top of the eighth inning, giving Southern Miss a chance to walk-off in the bottom of the frame.
Lee's double down the right line brought Natalie Taylor home to clinch the win for the Black & Gold, capping off a perfect stint at THE Spring Games. The Golden Eagles picked up a win in its first-ever meeting with Albany.Â
