HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Destini Brown became the first Golden Eagle in program history to record 100 stolen bases in a career on Friday, as Southern Miss battled North Texas. However, a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning sealed Southern Miss' first loss in seven games, as the Golden Eagles fell to the Mean Green, 2-0.Â
The Golden Eagles and Mean Green battled in a pitching duel, as Southern Miss' Morgan Leinstock and UNT's Skylar Savage exchanged blows throughout the contest. However, North Texas found offense in the final inning and Southern Miss (17-6, 0-1 C-USA) dropped to 9-6 at home.
Brown's milestone steal came in the third inning of the contest. The McComb, Miss. native is one of just two current student-athletes in Division I softball to eclipse the 100 steals mark.Â
A scoreless opening frame started off the contest, as both the Mean Green and Golden Eagles left a runner on base. Leinstock sent the next three batters she saw, and Maria Smith recorded a double in the bottom of the inning. The Golden Eagles were unable to bring her home, as the contest remained scoreless after two innings.
Leinstock struck out the next three batters from North Texas in the top of the third, and Brown got on base with a walk. She snatched second to claim her 100th steal moments later, but a double play from the Mean Green ended the frame.Â
Both pitchers made short work of the fourth inning, and neither team managed to record a run in the fifth, despite leaving runners on base.Â
North Texas loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the sixth, but a combination of strong pitching from Leinstock and strong defensive play from the Golden Eagles kept the game scoreless heading into the bottom of the frame.Â
The Golden Eagles were unable to capitalize on an error from North Texas in the sixth, and the game remained scoreless heading into the final frame. Two runs from UNT in the seventh followed, and Southern Miss could not respond, dropping its first game since Feb. 27.
UNT improved to 14-6 against Southern Miss in the all-time series, as the Golden Eagles fall to 4-3 at the Southern Miss Softball Complex against the Mean Green. Leinstock pitched the 12th complete game of her junior season, while Brown collected her conference-leading 19th steal on Friday.
