HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Senior Hunter Atkins (West Point, Miss.) fired a two-under 70 to lead Southern Miss to a fourth-place showing after the opening day of the Tiger Invitational by Jason Dufner.
The Golden Eagles were supposed to play 18 holes over three days in the 54-hole tournament at the par 72, 7,289-yard course at the Robert Trent Jones Trail at the Grand National Lake course in Opelika, Ala., but expected weather in the week forcing the teams to try and get two rounds in on Sunday.
Southern Miss only got about halfway through its second round before play was ended due to darkness.
Still, Southern Miss coach Eddie Brescher was extremely pleased with his team's effort on the event's first day.
"We played a lot of solid golf today," said Brescher. "None of our guys played bad, but no one got hot. Having a lot of our lineup in the Top 25 shows our consistency and depth throughout our lineup. We are looking forward to picking up where we left off tomorrow morning and keeping our hot streak going that we finished with in the second round."
Atkins ranked tied for eighth after his opening round 70, while senior Brice Wilkinson holds a tie for 14th place with a 71. Sophomore Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) added a 72 to tie for 21st and freshman Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.) carded a 73 to put him in a tie for 29th.
Sophomore Thongpipat Rattanayanon (Bangkok, Thailand) shot a 74 to put him in a 38th-place tie. Sophomore Warwick Purchase (Pretoria, South Africa), who is playing as an individual, shot a 79 to place him in an 80th place tie.
The Golden Eagles shot a two-under 286 for the opening round.
The action begins at 8 a.m., with a continuation of the second round with a shotgun start.
