
Golden Eagles Knock Off Omaha and Georgia Southern

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. -- The Golden Eagles racked up four home runs in a pair of games on Saturday, as the Southern Miss softball team defeated the Omaha Mavericks and Georgia Southern Eagles in Madeira Beach, Fla. The Black & Gold picked up a 5-2 win over the Mavericks before dominating the Eagles in an 8-1 victory.
Morgan Leinstock and Jana Lee both picked up complete-game wins in the circle for Southern Miss (16-5, 0-0 C-USA), while graduate student Destini Brown recorded home runs in both games. Hannah Borden finished her day with three hits, four RBI and a home run as the Black & Gold improved to 4-0 on the weekend at THE Spring Games.
Game One: Southern Miss 5, Omaha 2
The Golden Eagles opened Saturday with a 5-2 win over the Omaha Mavericks. Runs in five different innings propelled Southern Miss to its fourth win in a row, as the Black & Gold improved to 15-5.Â
Leinstock pitched her 10th complete game of the season, improving her record to 9-1 on the season. The Scottsdale, Ariz. native forced 13 groundouts and struck out five batters, as she gave up two or less runs for the seventh time this season in complete games.
Lee brought home the first run of the game in the top of the first, as a fielder's choice brought Brown home, moments after she stole second base. The Golden Eagles brought the 1-0 lead into the second, following a scoreless frame from the Mavericks.Â
After a double from Scout Jennings put runners on second and third, Maria Smith picked up an RBI single to extend Southern Miss' lead to 2-0. Leinstock and the Golden Eagle defense kept Omaha off the board, as the Black & Gold took the two-run advantage into the third.
Lee crushed a solo-shot to right center, extending the Golden Eagle lead to three runs. However, Southern Miss left two runners on base in the top of the third, holding the lead to just 3-0 heading into the bottom of the inning.Â
A scoreless fourth inning from both squads followed, and Omaha responded in the bottom of the fifth. The Mavericks picked up a pair of runs to cut Southern Miss' lead to just one, as the Golden Eagles brought the 3-2 advantage into the top of the sixth.
A home run to right center from Brown extended the lead to two in the top of the sixth, and a double from Terrica Williams brought Lee home in the top of the seventh give Southern Miss the 5-2 lead. Leinstock sent back Omaha's final three batters, as the Golden Eagles took the first matchup between the programs.
Game Two: Southern Miss 8, Georgia Southern 1
A pair of two-run bombs from Brown and Borden aided the Golden Eagles to victory, as Southern Miss dominated Georgia Southern, 8-1. The Black & Gold tied its previous mark for most runs in a game, improving to 4-0 in neutral-site competition.Â
After Georgia Southern struck first with a solo home run in the first, the Golden Eagles responded with a breakout third frame. Brown crushed a two-run homer over the right center fence, which was followed by another two-run shot from Borden just two batters later.Â
The offense continued to flow in the fourth, as a single from Borden brought home two runs for the Black & Gold. An RBI single from Jennings followed and the Golden Eagles took a commanding 7-1 lead into the top of the fifth.Â
Lee forced three groundouts in the top of the fifth frame, and Maria Smith picked up Southern Miss' eighth run of the contest in the bottom of the inning. Lee kept Georgia Southern off the board for the final two innings, as the Golden Eagles gathered their 16th win of the season.Â
