Southern Miss Defeats Central Michigan and Radford in Madeira Beach

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. -- Morgan Leinstock and Jana Lee held Southern Miss' opponents to just two runs in a pair of games on Friday, as the Golden Eagles picked up a pair of victories. The Black & Gold opened their weekend in Madeira Beach, Fla with a 3-0 win over Central Michigan before knocking off Radford, 5-2.
Graduate Tata Davis recorded home runs in both contests, while outfielder Destini Brown collected a homer of her own, along with a stolen base against the Chippewas. The Golden Eagles (14-5, 0-0 C-USA) recorded their ninth win in the last 10 outings.
Game One: Southern Miss 3, Central Michigan 0
The Golden Eagles opened their time in Madeira Beach against the Central Michigan Chippewas. Leinstock pitched her second complete-game shutout of the 2022 season in a 3-0 win to improve to 13-5.
Both Southern Miss and Central Michigan recorded six hits, but the Golden Eagles put runs on the board in the third and sixth innings to clinch the win. Davis was strong in her plate appearances, recording a pair of hits, including a home run and two RBI.
Scout Jennings got the scoring started in the third, as a single brought Brown home moments after the graduate outfielder recorded her 96th career stolen base. Jennings reached third on a throwing error from the Chippewas, and Davis brought Jennings home on the next at bat with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Leinstock and Southern Miss' defense held strong until an insurance run came off the bat of Davis in the top of the sixth. The Philadelphia, Miss. native crushed a solo shot, extending Southern Miss' lead to 3-0.
Following a scoreless top of the seventh from the Golden Eagles, a double play ended the contest, as Southern Miss improved to 4-0 away from Hattiesburg. The Black & Gold knotted up the all-time series with the Chippewas, which now sits at 2-2.Â
Leinstock finished the game with eight strikeouts and forced nine groundouts, as she improved to 8-1 on the season. Davis picked up her third home run of the season, which leads the Golden Eagles, while Brown snatched her 16th stolen base of the season.
Game Two: Southern Miss 5, Radford 2
The Golden Eagles picked up their ninth win in the last 10 contests as four runs in the top of the sixth pushed the Black & Gold past the Radford Highlanders. Southern Miss improved to 5-0 on the road, as Jana Lee pitched a complete game improving her record to 4-3.
Radford struck first in the bottom of the second inning, as a single from Radford brought in a pair of runs for the Highlanders. Southern Miss trailed 2-0, heading into the top of the third.
Davis sent a solo shot to left center, picking up her second home run of the day in the process. However, the Golden Eagles struggled to generate offense for the next two frames. Lee held strong in the circle as the score remained 2-1 heading into the sixth.
The Golden Eagles racked up four runs in the top of the sixth to take a 5-2 lead. A throwing error from Radford's shortstop brought pinch runner Columbia Holeman and Maria Smith home, and a two-run homer from Brown extended Southern Miss' lead to three runs, as the Black & Gold brought its first lead of the game into the seventh.
Lee sent the last six batters she saw back as the Albany, Ga. native finished her fourth complete game of the season. She ended her afternoon with five strikeouts and 10 forced groundouts.
