HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- A pair of home runs from Hannah Borden and Paige Kilgore were unable to lift Southern Miss past UAB on Saturday afternoon, as the Golden Eagles fell to the Blazers by a score of 4-2. The Black & Gold found offensive success late in the contest, but dropped its second game of the series at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
Rycca Hinton and Paige Kilgore split time in the circle, while six different Golden Eagles recorded hits. Southern Miss (18-14, 1-7 C-USA) left three runners on base in the bottom of the sixth inning as UAB improved to 7-1 in Conference USA play.
The Blazers got on the board early in the contest, as a sacrifice fly brought home the first run of the game. UAB left two runners on base, but took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the first. A double play and a strike out sent Southern Miss' first three batters back to end the opening frame.Â
Another sacrifice fly gave UAB a 2-0 advantage in the top of the second, and Southern Miss was unable to respond in the bottom of the frame. The Blazers recorded a fly out and two more strikeouts to close out the inning.Â
The Golden Eagles put away UAB after just three at bats, but could not capitalize, as Southern Miss trailed by two runs. The Black & Gold failed to record a hit through four frames and UAB tacked on another run to increase the lead to 3-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth, Borden gave erased former Southern Miss pitcher Makenna Pierce's no-hitter, as the Trussville, Ala. native powered one over the left field wall to cut into UAB's lead. Borden's fifth home run of the season trimmed the Blazers' advantage to 3-1 heading into the top of the sixth.Â
"I came in knowing that (Pierce) had the no-hitter, and I know, kind of, what she throws. I've caught for her before," Borden said. "It was a big moment; I knew I needed to do something for the team to try to get them going."
While UAB would respond with a run in the top of the sixth, Paige Kilgore recorded her second home run of the season, a solo shot to center, to cut the Blazer lead back to two. The Golden Eagles loaded the bases up with just one out on the board, but could not bring them home, as the score remained 4-2 heading into the seventh.Â
Southern Miss held UAB off in the top of the frame, but could not complete the comeback in the bottom of the inning. The Golden Eagles fell to 31-41 against UAB in the all-time series and now hold a record of 9-11 at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
"Softball's a game of inches, sometimes centimeters," head coach Brian Levin said. "Sometimes, things like this happen, but the great thing about it is that we have another opportunity to come back tomorrow."
Southern Miss recorded six hits in the loss and left three runners on base, while UAB failed to bring nine runners home. Kilgore allowed one run in 3.2 innings pitched in relief of Hinton.Â
