
Softball Falls in Nine Innings to UAB

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss softball team was unable to outlast UAB on Friday night, falling to the Blazers by a score of 4-3 after a nine-inning contest. The Golden Eagles led by as many as three runs, but could not hold on to defeat the Blazers.
The Golden Eagles received two hits, including a triple, from graduate outfielder Destini Brown, while Morgan Leinstock pitched five scoreless innings for the Black & Gold. Jana Lee and Paige Kilgore also saw time in the circle for Southern Miss, as Kilgore fell to 2-3 on the season.Â
Brown started the Golden Eagles off with a leadoff triple, but Southern Miss couldn't capitalize, leaving two runners on base in the bottom of the first. Southern Miss' defense held strong in the first two innings off, as the Golden Eagles sent back the first six UAB batters.Â
Another scoreless inning followed, before the Golden Eagles broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning. Maria Smith laid down a bunt, which brought home Columbia Holeman and a throwing error sent Alexis Dittmer home to give Southern Miss a 2-0 lead heading into the fifth frame.Â
Leinstock and Southern Miss' defense kept the Blazers off the board in the top of the fifth. The Golden Eagles tacked another run on the board, as a sacrifice fly from Hannah Borden brought Brown home to increase the Black & Gold's advantage to 3-0.
Jana Lee relieved Leinstock in the top of the sixth. UAB put three runs on the board to tie the game up, 3-3, heading into the bottom of the frame. The Golden Eagles put runners on first and second, but could not bring them home as the score remained tied.
Paige Kilgore entered the circle in the top of the seventh and kept the Blazers off the board to keep the game score deadlocked. The Golden Eagles could not score in the bottom of the inning as Southern Miss headed to extras for the third time this season.Â
In the top of the eighth, Brown made a spectacular diving play in center field, keeping the game knotted up at 3-3, which was followed by a strong effort from Natalie Taylor on a foul out to end the half inning.
The Golden Eagles loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh following a single from Scout Jennings and walks from pinch hitter Terrica Williams and Brown. Southern Miss could not bring in the winning run, leaving three runners on base.
UAB broke the tie in the top of the ninth with an RBI double, which gave the Blazers a 4-3 lead. The Golden Eagles were unable to respond, as the Blazers took the win after nine innings.Â
The Blazers outhit the Golden Eagles, 7-6 throughout the game, as Southern Miss fell to 31-40 in the all-time series against UAB. The Golden Eagles fell below .500 at home for the first time this season, as they now hold a 9-10 record in Hattiesburg. Southern Miss is now 1-2 in extra-inning contests.
