LAKE CHARLES, La. -- The Southern Miss softball team could not complete a late comeback, as the Golden Eagles fell to the McNeese Cowgirls on Wednesday night. The Black & Gold posted five runs over the course of the fourth and fifth frames but fell by a score of 8-5.
Graduate outfielder Destini Brown recorded her seventh home run of the season, while Tata Davis recorded three hits in four at bats. Paige Kilgore, Morgan Leinstock and Rycca Hinton all saw action in the circle.
Southern Miss left a runner on base in the first inning after Davis reached first with a single up the middle. The Cowgirls got on the board with an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead heading into the second frame.Â
The Golden Eagles failed to generate offense in the top of the second, and Leinstock entered the circle in the bottom of the inning. A two-RBI single from McNeese gave the Cowgirls a three-run advantage.
The Cowgirls tacked on four more runs on the bottom of the second to increase Southern Miss' deficit to 7-0. Hinton reached first with a walk to open the third, but following a fly out, McNeese turned a double play to end the frame.
After a scoreless inning from McNeese, Southern Miss chipped into the deficit in the top of the fourth. A single from Scout Jennings brought Davis home, and Hannah Borden reached home on a passed ball from the Cowgirls to trim the lead to 7-2.
Hinton entered the contest in the circle, making her third appearance of the season. The Mobile, Ala. native kept the Cowgirls off the board in the bottom of the fourth.
Hinton and Natalie Taylor both recorded singles to open the top of the fifth, and Brown crushed a three-run shot to dead center to cut McNeese's lead to just two runs. The Golden Eagles recorded four hits in the top of the frame and trailed by a score of 7-5 heading into the bottom of the inning.Â
The Golden Eagles held McNeese scoreless in the bottom of the fifth but were unable to cut into the Cowgirl lead in the top of the sixth. McNeese added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning, as Southern Miss trailed by three with the seventh approaching.
McNeese ended the contest, allowing no runs in the top of the seventh. Southern Miss fell to 25-13 in the all-time series against the Cowgirls, and now holds a record of 4-3 in road matchups. The Golden Eagles recorded 10 hits in a losing effort for the second time this season.
