MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- The Southern Miss softball team fell in extra innings to the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders on Sunday by a score of 6-5. Three RBI from Tata Davis and a home run from Maria Smith was not enough to push the Golden Eagles past MTSU.
The Black & Gold recorded nine hits in the loss, including three from Davis and two from Jana Lee. Lee and Morgan Leinstock split time in the circle, as Leinstock fell to 11-5 on the season.Â
A pair of walks and a Tata Davis single loaded the bases for the Golden Eagles in the first. With just one out on the board, Southern Miss was unable to convert the opportunity into runs, as MTSU escaped the top of the first unscathed.
The Blue Raiders took an early lead, as an RBI double gave MTSU the 1-0 advantage heading into the second. The Golden Eagles were unable to respond, leaving a runner on base in the bottom of the inning.Â
Following a double from Lee, Davis put the Golden Eagles on the board with an RBI single to tie the game up. Lee sent the next three Blue Raiders back, and Southern Miss found a breakout inning in the top of the fourth.
Natalie Taylor picked up a single, followed by a walk from Destini Brown which put runners on first and second. Davis came up large again for the Golden Eagles, with a two-RBI triple to give Southern Miss its first lead of the afternoon. Hannah Borden brought Davis home on the next at bat to extend the lead to 4-1.
Maria Smith crushed a solo shot to left field to bring Southern Miss' lead to four runs in the top of the fifth. The sophomore short stop recorded the third home run of the season, as the Golden Eagles extended their lead to 5-1 heading into the bottom of the inning.Â
The Blue Raiders responded with a four-run inning to tie the contest, 5-5. A trio of hits from MTSU brought home four runners for the home squad. The Golden Eagles were unable to respond in the top of the sixth, leaving a runner on base.
After the seventh frame, which saw Natalie Hurdle reach third base following a double and a throwing error, the score remained tied at 5-5, sending the Golden Eagles to extra innings for the second time this season.
A passed ball in the bottom of the ninth brought home the winning run for the Blue Raiders, as the Golden Eagles fell to 6-7 in the all-time series against MTSU. Southern Miss dropped its contest that went to extras in the process.
