No. 6 Loyola Marymount Proves Too Much for Golden Eagle Squad

LOS ANGELES – Southern Miss drops both matches of a doubleheader against No. 6 Loyola Marymount, falls to 3-14 in 2022.
Game 1 – No. 6 Loyola Marymount 5, Southern Miss 0
Southern Miss struggled to match Loyola Marymount early in the day and could not overcome the Lions for the rest of the match. At the first flight, Breleigh Favre and Kellie Garraway forced a third set after taking the first from the Lions top pair. The duo would fall 19-21 in the rubber set, falling just short of claiming the Golden Eagles first dual win on the day.
LMU would sweep Southern Miss across the board on the other four courts. At the second flight, freshman pair Aleksandra Chudzik and Vanessa Hurnikova fell 14-21, 16-21. Olivia Hepworth and Taylor Pierce were defeated 12-21, 17-21 at fight No. 3.
At the fourth position, Hallie Phelan and Reagan Sandlin were clipped by a score of 16-21, 12-21. Pair No. 5 Valeria Siakidou Papakyiakou and Kai Norman suffered similar defeats, falling 11-21 and 17-21.
The Golden Eagles fell to 3-13 on the season and 0-3 in true road games. Southern Miss and LMU would take a brief reprieve before facing off for the second match of their doubleheader.

The second match between the two squads was more of the same for Southern Miss. The Black & Gold were beaten in all five flights in straight sets. The Golden Eagles would keep the same lineups at each flight.
At flight No. 1, Favre/Garraway dropped 16-21 and 11-21 decisions. Chudzik/Hurnikova played a close first set, falling 18-21 before losing the dual after a 9-21 performance in the second set.
Third flight Hepworth/Pierce fell 11-21, 13-21 while Phelan/Sandlin lost by scores of 12-21 in both sets against the Lions No. 4 pair. Fifth flight duo Siakidou/Norman suffered a 13-21 and 17-21 defeat in their sets.

Southern Miss takes tomorrow off for travel and recovery as it heads to San Luis Obispo, Calif. to prepare for the Cal Poly Tournament on Sunday, March 20. Action begins for Southern Miss at 11 A.M. (CT) against host No. 12 Cal Poly. The Golden Eagles then play two matches to finish off the day against No. 10 Cal and Santa Clara at 2 P.M. and 4 P.M., respectively.
