Softball Falls to MTSU on Friday Night

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- The Southern Miss softball team fell to the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders in the opening contest of a three-game Conference USA series on Friday night. The Golden Eagles failed to put runs on the board, as MTSU took the contest at the Blue Raider Softball Field by a score of 4-0.Â
The Black & Gold were unable to put runs on the board against the Blue Raiders, as the Golden Eagles were shut out for the fourth time this season. Southern Miss picked up five hits throughout the game, leaving all five runners on base in the loss.Â
The Golden Eagles were unable to generate offense in the first frame, as MTSU struck out two batters and forced a groundout to close the half inning. The Blue Raiders took advantage in the bottom of the first, tacking on a run to take the 1-0 lead.
After a scoreless second, Jana Lee picked up Southern Miss' first hit of the game, a double to right center field with no outs. The Golden Eagles were unable to bring home the Albany, Ga. native, and MTSU capitalized, scoring three runs in the bottom of the third to extend the lead to 4-0.Â
Neither team was able to put runs on the board in the fourth, or fifth, as both teams combined for just two hits in that span. Southern Miss picked up a trio of hits in the top of the sixth as Natalie Taylor, Destini Brown and Hannah Borden all recorded singles to load the bases.
MTSU's Gretchen Mead held strong in the circle for the Blue Raiders, ending the frame for the Golden Eagles with a strikeout, leaving three runners on base. The Black & Gold held Middle Tennessee off the board in the bottom of the sixth.
Graduate infielder Tata Davis picked up a stand up double to open the top of the seventh with one out on the board. However, a pair of strikeouts ended the contest, as the Golden Eagles fell to 5-6 in the all-time series to the Blue Raiders. Middle Tennessee also takes a 3-1 advantage at in Murfreesboro against Southern Miss.Â
