HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss softball team fell to the North Texas Mean Green on Saturday in game two of its first Conference USA series. The Golden Eagles struggled defensively and were unable to put up runs, as UNT picked up the win by a score of 7-1.Â
The Golden Eagles committed four fielding errors, the most this season, which created scoring opportunities for the Mean Green. Five of UNT's runs came in the final three innings of play, and Southern Miss (17-7, 0-2 C-USA) was unable to respond, despite outhitting the Mean Green, 7-6.Â
Jana Lee pitched the sixth complete game of her freshman campaign, striking out six batters as she fell to a 5-4 record. Graduate outfielder Destini Brown recorded a double, as well as the Black & Gold's only run of the game, while Lee picked up a pair of hits.
North Texas put a run on the board in the top of the first, but Brown responded with a double, and a wild pitch brought the McComb, Miss. native home. Southern Miss and North Texas entered the second frame tied at 1-1.
Lee sent back nine of the next ten batters she faced, as Southern Miss and North Texas were both unable to open the game up through four innings. The Golden Eagles left three runners on base in the third, and were unable to bring home Columbia Holeman from scoring position in the fourth after she stole second.
Two errors from Southern Miss in the top of the fifth saw North Texas pick up the 4-1 lead following a trio of runs. UNT's Ashley Peters sent the next three Golden Eagles back, as Southern Miss tailed by three heading into the sixth.
The Mean Green tacked on a pair of runs in the sixth, and following a scoreless frame from Southern Miss, UNT extended its lead to six with sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh. The Golden Eagles were unable to produce offense in the final frame.
Southern Miss fell to 6-15 against the Mean Green in the all-time series, while North Texas improved to 13-4 on the season with the win.Â
