Southern Miss Falls to Middle Tennessee in Conference USA Quarterfinals

FRISCO, Texas – The Southern Miss women's basketball team was unable to overcome a frenzy of 3-point shots from the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders, falling 70-50 inside the Ford Center on Thursday night.
"Those four seniors are so special to me," head coach Joye Lee-McNelis said. "They've grown so much as people and as students. They'll all four graduate here soon. It's been a journey with them, through a lot of ups and downs. To watch them grow as young people, I'm going to miss them."
Southern Miss was led by Domonique Davis with 14 points, while senior Kelsey Jones was right behind her with 13 points.
Both teams struggled offensively to start the contest, as the first made field-goal didn't come until the 8:03 mark on a made 3 from Middle Tennessee. The Lady Eagles found their footing, answering Middle with a 7-0 run, including a pair of baskets from Kelsey Jones and a shot beyond the arc from Brikayla Gray. Southern Miss continued to pound the paint going for 10 of their 15 points inside the lane to jump out to a 15-13 advantage.
The Lady Eagles went cold to starting the second period, going without a field goal until the 3:16 mark on Jones' fourth bucket of the first half. A big 3 from sophomore Rose Warren helped the Black and Gold get the Raider advantage to just eight going into the locker room.
Middle connected on another jumper to extend their lead to 15, before Lauren Gross hit on her first shot beyond the arc and Davis drove and drew the contact to get an and-1 play, cutting the Raider advantage to nine with 3:27 left. MTSU found an open shooter in the corner at the buzzer to extend their advantage out to 57-43 entering the final stanza.
Southern Miss failed to get any closer in the fourth quarter, as the Lady Eagles went just 3-of-15 from the field to close the contest.
The Lady Eagles now awaits their postseason fate, having placed a bid with the NIT Tournament with selection Sunday on the horizon.
