HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss softball team opened the Golden Eagle Invitational on Friday, Feb. 18, splitting the first two games of the tournament. The Black & Gold dropped the opening game of the day, a 2-1 decision against Jacksonville State, before defeating Mississippi Valley State by a score of 2-1 in the nightcap.
Hannah Borden recorded the second home run of her junior campaign against the Gamecocks, while Jana Lee picked up the second win of her collegiate career against the Devilettes. Destini Brown extended her stolen base program record with her 87th career-steal.
Game 1: Southern Miss 1, Jacksonville State 2
Despite six solid innings from Morgan Leinstock, Southern Miss was unable to provide run support, falling to the Jacksonville State Gamecocks, 2-1. The Black & Gold fell to 4-4 after dropping the first game of the Golden Eagle Invitational.Â
Borden picked up her second home run of the season; a solo shot deep to center field, to give Southern Miss the 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the fourth. Lee reached first on a base hit, but was left on base following a pair of outs that held Southern Miss to a one-run lead.
Leinstock conceded the first run of her afternoon in the top of the sixth, which tied the game at one run apiece. A scoreless bottom of the frame from the Golden Eagles opened the door for the Gamecocks.Â
Jacksonville State scored one run in the seventh inning on reliever Lee, which ultimately was enough to seal the game.Â
The Golden Eagles fell to 16-6 in the all-time series to the Gamecocks, and a 12-4 mark in Hattiesburg against Jacksonville State in the loss.
Game 2: Southern Miss 2, MVSU 1
Lee threw for her second-career victory against the MVSU Devilettes in the second game of Southern Miss' evening. The Albany, Ga. native held MVSU to just two hits, propelling the Golden Eagles to a 5-4 record.
Despite an early score from Brown in the first inning to give Southern Miss the lead, runs were hard to come by for both teams. A pitching duel emerged between Lee and MVSU's Daisy Page.
Both teams were blanked by the pitchers until the top of the sixth inning, when the Devilettes were able to tie the matchup at 1-1.Â
Lee proved to be the difference maker both in the circle and at the plate, as an RBI double gave the Golden Eagles a slim 2-1 lead heading into the top of the seventh. A trio of groundouts followed, clinching the game for Southern Miss.
The Golden Eagles improve to 12-2 against the Devilettes in program history, including a stellar 11-1 mark at home.Â
