BATON ROUGE, La. -- The Southern Miss softball team picked up a pair of wins on the road against the Southern Lady Jaguars in a doubleheader on Wednesday evening. The Golden Eagles snapped a three-game skid with victories by scores of 3-1 and 7-4 in their first road contests of the 2022 season.Â
A trio of freshmen recorded their first-career home runs on Wednesday, as Natalie Taylor, Jana Lee and Paige Kilgore helped lead the Golden Eagles (4-3, 0-0 C-USA) to victory. Morgan Leinstock and Lee both pitched complete games, with the latter notching her first-career win in the circle.
Graduate outfielder Destini Brown extended her program stolen bases record to 86 with a pair of steals. The Black & Gold increase its advantage to 12-0 in the all-time series against the Lady Jaguars, as head coach Brian Levin improves to 6-0 against Southern.
Game 1: Southern Miss 3, Southern 1
Strong pitching from Leinstock and timely runs helped Southern Miss outlast the Lady Jaguars in the first game of the doubleheader, as the Golden Eagles picked up their third win of the season, 3-1.Â
Lee got the scoring going in the second inning, as a shot over the right field fence gave Southern Miss a 1-0 lead. Leinstock and the defense held the Lady Jaguars at bay, as the Golden Eagles took the advantage into the third inning.Â
Following a single, Brown stole second base to start off the top of the third, and a double from fellow graduate student Tata Davis brought the McComb, Miss. native home. Hannah Borden followed up with an RBI double, extending Southern Miss' lead to 3-0 heading through three innings.
Southern would capitalize on an error from the Golden Eagles in the fifth, but it would not be enough, as Leinstock picked up her second win of the season in a strong performance. The Scottsdale, Ariz. native recorded five strikeouts and forced 11 groundouts in the victory.
Game 2: Southern Miss 7, Southern 4
The Golden Eagles saw an influx of offense off the bats of a pair of freshmen that propelled Southern Miss to a 4-3 record. The Lady Jaguars were unable to close the deficit late in the game, as the Black & Gold completed the sweep by a score of 7-4.
Davis opened the scoring in game two of the doubleheader following a single, as a throwing error from Southern shortstop Roxsanna Segura gave Southern Miss a 1-0 lead. Lee forced a groundout and struck out the final two batters Southern brought to the plate, as USM took a 1-0 lead into the second.Â
Southern Miss racked up three runs in the top of the second to extend the lead to 4-0, while Lee continued to blank the Lady Jaguars. Taylor homered to right field, followed by an RBI single from Borden later in the fourth to give Southern Miss a commanding 6-0 lead.
SU trimmed Southern Miss' lead to three runs in the bottom of the fourth, but Kilgore would extend the advantage for the visitors with her first career homer in the top of the fifth. Lee would allow just one final run in the seventh inning, as the Golden Eagles improved to 2-0 in road matchups.
