NEW ORLEANS, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's golf team finished in ninth at the Tulane Classic, firing a 938 over the three-day event at English Turn Golf & Country Club. Junior Friend Chompitakdacha was the top finisher for the Golden Eagles, shooting a 233 to finish tied for 24th.
"What a great test to start the semester," said head coach Lucy Nunn-Burke. "We battled the entire week and I think we handled all conditions well. We can only build from here and I'm excited to have a quick turnaround to get back at it."
Backed by a four-over par 76, freshman Momoka Ando moved up the leaderboard on the final day to finish tied for 33rd. With two birdies in tow, Ando carded the low round for Southern Miss on the final day. Elena Melich and Merche Corbacho each scored a six-over 78 to move up a spot on the leaderboard. On the 12th hole, Corbacho drained her second shot on the par three to record her only birdie of the round. Melich stayed steady on the back nine, recording a par on seven consecutive holes before ending her round with a bogey on 18.
Sophomore Icie Cockerham recorded her best round of the tournament, finishing with one birdie today. Playing as an individual for the Golden Eagles, Jacee Fields finished with a nine-over 81. Starting on the back nine, Fields birdied the 16th hole after struggling on it in the previous two rounds.
The ninth-place finish marked the best start to the spring semester since Southern Miss finished third at the Edwin Watts Kiawah Island Spring Classic in February of 2017. Former Golden Eagle Nichada Satasuk finished tied for third at the event to lead all team members.
Southern Miss will return back to Hattiesburg this week to prepare for the Tchefuncta Invitational at Tchefuncta Country Club in Covington, La. The two-day event will start on Monday, Feb. 21 and end on Tuesday, Feb. 22.
