HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Three Southern Miss golfers shot under par Monday in the opening round of the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate, before play was suspended due to darkness at the event being played at the Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Club in Mobile, Ala.
Southern Miss opened the event at the par-72, 7,212-yard course with an even-par 288 and was tied for fourth after 18 holes. The second round, though, was suspended due to darkness with the Golden Eagles at five-over-par as a team with the squad through 13 and 14 holes of play. A frost delayed the start of the tournament during the morning.
"It is tough to gauge where we are on the leaderboard overnight," said Southern Miss coach Eddie Brescher. "We have an easy stretch of holes to play to finish the second round. Meanwhile, the leaders have a tough stretch to finish round two. That does play in our favor since we resume as 8am in the morning. The ball will be traveling shorter and wind will be a factor.
"Everyone is bunched up, so it is anyone's ballgame to make a move tomorrow."
Sophomore Thongpipat Rattanayanon (Bangkok, Thailand) led the way for the Golden Eagles with a two-under 70, while both senior Brice Wilkinson (Madison, Miss.) and sophomore Robbie Latter each added a 71 in the opening round.
Both senior Hunter Atkins (West Point, Miss.) and sophomore Bennett Rudy (Waterloo, Ontario) rounded out the Southern Miss scoring as each posted a 76.
"It is very encouraging to post an even-par round and we did not have our A game in round one," said Brescher. "If we can close out round two around par, then get four red scores in the final round, we should pick up some quality wins for the week."
The tournament will finish the second round at 8 a.m., before playing a final 18 holes to conclude the event.
