HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss received five stellar innings from junior pitcher Morgan Leinstock, but fell to the Samford Bulldogs on the final day of the Black & Gold Invitational, 6-0.
The Golden Eagles (2-3, 0-0 C-USA) dropped the second contest of a two-game series against Samford. Southern Miss was unable to generate offense throughout the afternoon game, while Samford found timely runs in the final two innings to improve to 3-2.
Leinstock finished the game with 116 pitches, the second-most of her career and the fourth time she has hit triple-digit pitching totals in a single game. She also racked up six strikeouts and recorded her second complete game of the season.
A duel between Leinstock and Samford's McKenzie Newcomb opened the afternoon, as both pitchers threw effectively through five innings. Both Newcomb and Leinstock conceded just four hits heading into the sixth inning.Â
Samford scored two runs in the top of the sixth innings, taking the first lead of the game following a double that brought two runs home. Tata Davis and Destini Brown both found themselves on base following back-to-back singles, but the Golden Eagles were unable to bring them home as the Bulldogs led 2-0 heading into the seventh inning.
A grand slam in the top of the seventh extended Samford's lead to six runs and the Golden Eagles were unable to get on base in the bottom of the final inning.Â
Samford tied the all-time series against the Golden Eagles, with both programs holding nine wins through 18 meetings. Southern Miss also falls to 5-5 against the Bulldogs in Hattiesburg.
