The Golden Eagles (2-2, 0-0 C-USA) found success at the plate in the first game of the day. Junior catcher Hannah Borden picked up her first home run of the season against Samford, one of 10 hits from Southern Miss hitters in the opening game of the day.
Southern Miss struggled both offensively and defensively in the second contest of the day. The Golden Eagles only mustered three hits, while allowing 10 in the loss to UNA to close out day two.
Head coach Brian Levin's squad falls to a .500 record on the season and a 12-4 record in the Black & Gold Invitational, dating back to 2019.
Game 1: Southern Miss 6, Samford 10
The Golden Eagles were supplied with offense from the likes of Scout Jennings and Borden, but were unable to overcome the Samford Bulldogs in the Black & Gold's first game of the day. Samford found timely hits in the fifth inning to hand the Golden Eagles their first loss of the season.
Following a two-run top of the first from Samford, freshman Alexis Dittmer brought home Tata Davis with a sacrifice fly to left field. The Golden Eagles left two on base, but cut Samford's lead in half as the Bulldogs led 2-1 heading into the second.
A pair of scoreless frames from both sides were followed by three runs from Samford in the fourth and fifth innings, giving the Bulldogs a 5-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth.Â
Davis cut Samford's lead to two with a sacrifice fly to center field, which brought sophomore Maria Smith home. An RBI single from freshman Jana Lee set up a two-RBI single from fellow freshman Scout Jennings to tie the contest up at 5-5.
A five-run frame from Samford in the sixth gave the Bulldogs a commanding 10-5 lead, and while Borden recorded a solo shot homer in the seventh, it was not enough to complete the comeback.Â
Samford trimmed Southern Miss' all-time series lead to 9-8, including a 5-4 record in Hattiesburg. The Golden Eagles will face off with Samford in their final game of the Black & Gold Invitational tomorrow afternoon.
Game 2: Southern Miss 0, North Alabama 7
After a strong offensive showing against North Alabama in the opening game of the Black & Gold Invitational, the Lions tied the series with the Golden Eagles with a 7-0 win on Saturday.Â
North Alabama opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly RBI which gave the Lions a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the second. A five-run third frame from UNA extended Southern Miss' deficit to 6-0.
A pair of singles from Southern Miss from Borden and senior Terrica Williams put two runners on base in the bottom of the fourth. However, a pair of strikeouts ended the inning, as the UNA kept Southern Miss scoreless.
Junior Morgan Leinstock entered the circle for Southern Miss in the fifth inning and finished the game with a strong performance. The Scottsdale, Ariz. native allowed just one hit and recorded a pair of strikeouts to close out the game.Â
The Golden Eagles and Lions now sit at 1-1 in the all-time series, as the Black & Gold Invitational marked the first two meetings between the programs.
