LAS VEGAS, Nevada – UNLV (11-1, 0-0 MW) erased a one-point halftime deficit to hand Southern Miss (11-2, 0-0 SBC) a 74-63 loss at the Thomas & Mack Center on Thursday night. DeAndre Pinckney, though, went for a career-high 23 points and 23 rebounds to record his third double-double of the season.
As a team that had made 12-plus three-pointers in each of its last three games, Southern Miss went 2-of-19 from deep. Fortunately for UNLV, the Runnin' Rebels cashed in on eight three-pointers.
The first half was a Vegas slugfest as both UNLV and Southern Miss traded blows. Southern Miss took the first four-point lead of the game right off the bat and then UNLV answered to take a four-point lead of their own with 7:10 left in the half.
A Donovan Ivory layup started an 8-3 run after that which put the Golden Eagles back in the lead and Austin Crowley tacked on a pair of free throws. Then a Pinckney layup followed put the Golden Eagles up 24-22. Luis Rodriguez immediately followed with a clutch three-pointer that swung UNLV back in front.
With halftime creeping closer, Pinckney and Ivory combined for a 5-0 run to put Southern Miss ahead by one at the break. Ivory took a backdoor pass from Haase and dunked an easy basket to cap the run. Neither team scored over the final 1:21 of the half.
UNLV started the second half with an alley-oop from David Muoka, but the Golden Eagles ripped off a 6-0 run to go up 39-34. The Runnin' Rebels kept throwing jabs into the Southern Miss lead and landed the haymaker when Elijah Harkless gave them a 45-43 lead.
Harkless' basket was part of a 15-0 run that gave UNLV a 54-43 lead with 9:32 left in the game. Another 6-0 run from Southern Miss cut it to a six-point game, but on queue UNLV hit a big time shot.
The Golden Eagles got within five with 4:23 to go before the home team scored seven-straight points to deliver the knockout punch. Southern Miss finished its non-conference schedule with an impressive 11-2 record.
Southern Miss turned the ball over a season-high 25 times and UNLV only coughed up the ball 13 times. Crowley finished with 18 points on 6-of-13 from the field. Haase – who finished with a career-high six assists – was limited to one point. Ivory chipped in with six points and Mo Arnold added five. Arnold finished with three assists.
