HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball team garnered a No. 18 preseason ranking by Collegiate Baseball in an announcement by the publication Tuesday morning.
The Golden Eagles finished 47-19 a season ago, winning the Conference USA regular season crown – their sixth overall title – in the school's final season in the league. They also hosted an NCAA Regional for the third time as well as their first-ever Super Regional. Southern Miss defeated LSU twice over a two-day period to capture its own regional for the initial time and second overall, also winning in Atlanta in 2009.
Southern Miss debuted in the 2022 Collegiate Baseball poll at No. 27 in late March and vaulted as high as No. 8 (April 25) before its final ranking of No. 15 by the publication at the conclusion of the season.
This spring, Scott Berry begins his 14th season as the Golden Eagles head coach and his team opens the 2023 campaign against Liberty, Friday, Feb. 17, at 4 p.m., at Pete Taylor Park.
The schedule for 2023, which includes their first season in the Sun Belt Conference, stacks up as one of the toughest in school history as the team plays 31 home games, with 14 coming against squads which made the NCAA Tournament a year ago and highlights a slate that boasts nine total teams that reached postseason play and 24 of the 54 scheduled contests versus opponents that were among the final 64 to play last spring.
