BEAUMONT, Texas – The Southern Miss men's basketball team notched its 10th win of the season in Tuesday's 91-65 win at Lamar (4-7, 0-0 Southland). It's the first Golden Eagle (10-1, 0-0 SBC) team to start 10-1 since the 2000-01 season.
Felipe Haase's monster first half helped Southern Miss take an early advantage after a slow start. The Chilean forward knocked down four three-pointers in the first half and the Golden Eagles went 7-of-25 over the first 20 minutes.
Haase's 17 points in the opening stanza came after he scored the first nine points – outside of Mo Arnold's made free throw -- for the Black and Gold. Lamar answered nearly every Southern Miss basket until a 15-4 run over the final four minutes put it ahead by 11. Austin Crowley and DeAndre Pinckney accounted for 12 points during that stretch.
After the Cardinals opened the second half with a quick basket, Southern Miss hit a 16-2 run to pull away for good. The stretch started when Tyler Morman cut hard to the rim for a contested layup and then Pinckney put the exclamation on it with a thunderous dunk.
Arnold and Haase knocked down back-to-back baskets to push the lead to 26 less than five minutes into the half. Donovan Ivory blew the lid off the basket with a three-pointer that pretty much all but sent Lamar packing. With the Golden Eagles in control, the bench got rowdy after Jeffery Armstrong cashed his first three-pointer of the season. Armstrong then got the bench up again when he hit another three-pointer to make it a 27-point game.
Jay Ladner started to empty his bench with 3:19 left and the Golden Eagles that checked out got a standing ovation from the Southern Miss faithful in attendance. Victor Hart added four points over the final two minutes and then Trey Alfonso found the scoring column when GianFranco Grafals found a cutting Alfonso under the basket. Ivory finished with 10 points and Crowley added 13.
Alfonso's basket put a stamp on the 26-point win. The Golden Eagles never trailed against Lamar for the second consecutive game and scored 186 points in the 96-hour span. The record rivals the beginning of the 1952-53, 1990-91 and 2000-01 seasons.
The Golden Eagle attempted a program-high 42 three-pointers and hit 14 of them. The previous record for triples attempted was 40 against Mississippi State in 1965. The Golden Eagles lead the Sun Belt Conference in wins and winning percentage. Pinckney finished with 17 points and nine rebounds, while Haase's team-high 13 rebounds gave him a double-double. Haase's 28 points were the most the Chilean has scored as a Golden Eagle. He finished 6-of-9 from deep.
Southern Miss will look to continue its historic start on Sunday, Dec. 18 when it hosts McNeese. Tipoff inside Reed Green Coliseum is set for 2 p.m.
