Lady Eagle Basketball Set for Season Opener
11/6/2022 4:45:00 PM | Women's Basketball
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss opens its 48th season of women's basketball against long-time foe William Carey (1-1, 0-0 SSAC) in their annual Education Day game. Head coach Joye Lee-McNelis sports a perfect 13-0 record over the Crusaders and earned her 500th career win last season over the crosstown opponent.
Last Time Out
Southern Miss is coming off of a narrow 81-78 victory over Auburn University at Montgomery last Wednesday. The Warhawks' hot shooting performance and quick guard play gave the Black & Gold everything they could handle, but Melyia Grayson's 21-point, 20 rebound performance and Domonique Davis' 28 points proved just enough to outlast the exhibition opponent.
The Game
Southern Miss takes the floor against William Carey for the 20th time in each program's history. The two teams first met in 1977 in Reed Green Coliseum where Southern Miss prevailed 79-68. Overall, the Lady Eagles own a 18-1 record over the Crusaders and are riding a 17-game win streak dating back to Jan. 29, 1987.
The Crusaders are led by 33rd year head coach Tracy English, who has been at the helm of the Carey program since 1990. English is still searching for his first win over Southern Miss as he holds a 0-13 record against the Black & Gold.
The 2022-23 Crusaders are coming off of a season opening tournament in Lakeland, Fla. The Crusaders emerged 1-1, downing Webber International, 68-55, and falling narrowly to Keiser, 52-51.

Tomorrow's game will be streamed via ESPN+ with Lee Roberts and Kay James providing the play-by-play and color commentary, respectively.
