HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss football team returns home this weekend to close out its home regular season against South Alabama in the first meeting between the schools as Sun Belt Conference foes.
Game time takes place at 2:30 p.m., at The Rock and can be seen on the NFL Network, as well as heard on one of the affiliates of the Southern Miss Sports Network by Learfield.
The Golden Eagles (5-5 overall, 3-3 Sun Belt) look to snap a two-game losing streak, while also earning bowl eligibility for the 22nd time over the last 27 seasons. Coach Will Hall's squad dropped a close 26-23 contest at now nationally ranked Coastal Carolina last weekend.
This game marks the final contest for 24 Golden Eagles, who will be honored prior to the game as part of Senior Day.
This will be the third overall meeting between the two teams with South Alabama (8-2, 5-1) capturing both meetings, including a 31-7 decision in Mobile last season.
The Jaguars, under second-year coach Kane Wommack, who played fullback and tight end for the Golden Eagles, are one of five programs Southern Miss will face this season that has won at least eight games. Two of those programs – Tulane and Coastal Carolina – currently hold national rankings with three more programs, Liberty, South Alabama, and Troy, receiving votes in both major college football polls.
Southern Miss holds the distinction of being one of seven programs in the Football Bowl Subdivision to play five teams that have posted eight or more victories at this point in the campaign. The six other schools include Arizona State, Arkansas, Auburn, Georgia Tech, Stanford and UCLA.
Golden Eagle quarterback Trey Lowe is expected to receive his second-straight start after throwing for a career-high 295 yards last week. Frank Gore, Jr., also continues to play well, having registered 46 yards rushing, 18 yards passing and a career-high 90 receiving yards in his last contest.
Gore, Jr., leads the team in rushing with 788 yards for 4.8 yard per carry and at 78.8 yards per game. He still can become the school's first 1,000-yard rusher since Ito Smith had 1,415 yards in 2017.
Senior Jason Brownlee, who was named a Conerly Trophy finalist for the top player in the state of Mississippi earlier this week, ranks first on the team in catches (44), receiving yards (687) and scoring grabs (6) this season. He tallied his ninth career 100-yard receiving game last week at Coastal Carolina and that total ranks No. 4 on the Golden Eagle career chart.
On defense, Malik Shorts continues with the most tackles at 75, along with holding a team-high tying three interceptions as seven different Southern Miss players hold at least one pick this fall for a total of 14, which ranks No. 6 in the FBS.
The Golden Eagles also rank No. 4 nationally in tackles for loss per game (8.4) and No. 8 in sacks (3.30). Dominic Quewon leads the way in sacks with 8.5, while he and Averie Habas paces the squad in tackles for loss with 9.5 each.
Following the South Alabama contest, the Golden Eagles complete the regular season next weekend, Saturday, Nov. 26, on the road at 4 p.m. versus ULM.
