HATTIESBURG, Miss. --Â The Southern Miss (3-0, 0-0 SBC) men's basketball team answered a slow start en route to cruising past Loyola New Orleans on Monday night at Reed Green Coliseum. The Golden Eagles moved to 3-0 for the first time since the 2018-19 season with the 86-62Â win.
DeAndre Pinckney drained the first Golden Eagle shot attempt from a good distance behind the 3-point arc 13 seconds in the game, but Southern Miss stalled after that. Loyola New Orleans answered with a Joey Galloway bucket -- Galloway was averaging 23.0 points per game heading into the contest. The Wolf Pack twice held a three-point lead in the opening minutes before Southern Miss came back to trade blows with the reigning NAIA National Champions.Â
With seven minutes left on the clock, Denijay Harris went to work in the lane and gave Southern Miss the lead. It would be a lead they would hold to for the next 27 minutes. Harris then scored back-to-back baskets two minutes later to push the lead to six. It was all Southern Miss from there. It ended the half on a 10-2 run that included a pair of gritty buckets from Marcelo Perez. One saw Perez cut across the top of the lane and lay in a contested layup. A Jeffery Armstrong layup under the basket put the Golden Eagles up by 13 heading into the break.Â
Felipe Haase, who finished with 17 points, scored seven of those in the opening half. Pinckney led the charge with 13 first-half points on 4-of-6 shooting. Harris added 10 points in the first 20 minutes to help Ladner's team shoot 48.6 percent from the floor in the half. It was the highest first-half field goal percentage of the season for Southern Miss. Meanwhile, the Wolf Pack enjoyed a 46.7 shooting clip in the first half.Â
Loyola New Orleans cut it to an 11-point game after halftime, but an Austin Crowley three put the Golden Eagles back up by 14. They wouldn't let the Wolf Pack get within 16 for the rest of night. It grew to as many as 28 in the second half after Mo Arnold stepped up to hit a 3-pointer. Luke Ladner trimmed the deficit for the Wolf Pack with a layup against. The significance of it? Well, it came against his father, Jay. It was the second time in three seasons where the Ladner's have squared off in a father-son game. Southern Miss has taken both of those.Â
Haase and Crowley each had 10 points in the second half, while Crowley ended his night with 15 total points. He has now scored in double figures in each of the first three games this season. Pinckney had another efficient stat line for Southern Miss -- 16 points, seven rebounds and four steals in 20 minutes of action.Â
Donovan Ivory chipped in with six of Southern Miss' 32 bench points. GianFranco Grafals added another four points with a good run down the stretch when Tate Ryde and Trey Alfonso came in off the bench. For the third time this season, Southern Miss held the scoring advantage in the paint (50-40).Â
The Golden Eagles pulled down 44 rebounds and held the Wolf Pack to only 26 boards. The Black and Gold outrebounded them 14-3 on the offensive glass. Harris led all Golden Eagles with nine rebounds. Southern Miss also had 10-plus steals for the third time this season after having only two such games last season.Â
Despite its slow start, Southern Miss had its best shooting percentage of the season after finishing with a 48.5 percent clip. The Golden Eagle defense held the Wolf Pack to 30 points below their points per game average even though they shot 49.1 percent from the floor.Â
