HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss football team looks to become bowl eligible this weekend when they travel to face new foe, Coastal Carolina, in a cross-divisional Sun Belt Conference contest.
Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. CT and can be seen on ESPNU, as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network by Learfield.
The Golden Eagles look to become bowl eligible for the 18th time since the 2000 season.
Southern Miss (5-4 overall, 3-2 Sun Belt) saw a three-game winning streak snapped last weekend when they dropped a 42-14 decision at home to Georgia State. The Chanticleers (8-1, 5-1) lead the Sun Belt East Division and are coming off a 35-28 victory against App State.
Coastal, though, will be without the services of a two-time Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year, quarterback Grayson McCall, who is out three to six weeks with an injury.
Frank Gore, Jr., continues to lead the Golden Eagle offense, putting together 91.9 all-purpose yards per contest. Those numbers include 742 yards rushing as he averages 4.9 yards per carry. He increased his team lead in rushing scores to five last weekend when he dashed for 43 yards against the Panthers for one of the team's two touchdowns.
Gore, Jr., has also thrown for 100 yards out of the SuperBack formation with a 52-yard touchdown to Tiaquelin Mims earlier this year. It was the fifth career passing touchdown of his career.
The Golden Eagles will go with one of three quarterbacks against the Chanticleers this weekend, either freshman Zach Wilcke, who has started the last eight games, sophomore Jake Lange, or redshirt junior Trey Lowe, who threw for 84 yards on 6-of-14 throws with a touchdown last week off the bench against Georgia State.
At receiver, senior Jason Brownlee leads the Golden Eagles in receiving with 38 catches for 564 yards and six touchdown grabs. Brownlee has caught at least three passes in each of the last six games, including four grabs for 65 yards last week against the Panthers.
On defense, defensive back Malik Shorts continues to lead the team with 71 tackles – including three contests with double-figure stops – while Santrell Latham is next with 60 and Daylen Gill at 58. Dominic Quewon also holds the top sack total for the squad with 7.5 in 2022, which ranks No. 12 nationally.
Jalen Williams leads the defensive linemen in tackles with 38, including a season-high nine last week against Georgia State.
Following the Coastal Carolina contest, the Golden Eagles return home next week for their final regular season home contest against South Alabama. Game time takes place at 2:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on the NFL Network.
