HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss women's basketball travels to Valparaiso, Ind. for their first road contest of the young 2022-23 season. The noon CT tip off marks the Lady Eagles' first against Valparaiso and is only the second time the team has played in the Hoosier State.
Last Time Out
The Lady Eagles (1-0, 0-0 Sun Belt) opened the 2022-23 season against William Carey with an 81-58 win over the cross-town Crusaders.
Junior guard Domonique Davis (DeRidder, La. // LSU) rode a 25-point second half to a career-high 36 points and eight rebounds on 35 minutes of play. Southern Miss notched their 19th win against William Carey and moved to 19-1 all-time.
Asia Broughton (Houston, Texas // Cypress Ridge HS) came off the bench to bring down 15 boards, including 10 offensive, both career highs.
Black & Gold newcomer Lani Cornfield (Gowanda, N.Y. // Northwest Florida State) made quite the debut, dropping 13 points and seven assists to compliment four takeaways on the day.
Previewing the Beacons
Valparaiso (1-0, 0-0 Missouri Valley) opened their season Monday with a 71-64 win over Central Michigan. Led by fifth-year head coach Mary Evans, the Beacons finished 2021-22 11-19 overall but proved competitive in MVC play, finishing 9-9.
The Beacons utilize a healthy three ball and pair it with an effective field goal percentage. Valpo placed four players in double-figure scoring against Central Michigan last week and shot a collective 51 percent while holding CMU to just 31.6 percent.
Picked 10th in the Missouri Valley Conference's preseason polls, Valpo proves to be an excellent first test for Southern Miss.
