DENTON, Texas – A career-high matching 30 points from Pre-Season Conference USA Player of the Year Quincy Noble was too much to overcome, as the Southern Miss women's basketball team fell 72-66 at The Super Pit on Thursday night.
"I thought we made some poor decisions," said head coach Joye Lee-McNelis. "We have to be able to take some ownership. We had to control the tempo of this game and we were unable to do that tonight. Our growth still lacks a little, we just have to learn and continue to get better."
The Lady Eagles (11-7, 3-4 C-USA) were led in scoring by junior Domonique Davis with 22 points. Davis has now scored 10 or more in nine-straight contests. Senior Kelsey Jones had arguably her best game of the season going a perfect 7-of-7 to join Davis in double-figures with 15.
Southern Miss jumped out to an early 21-17 advantage after the opening quarter of play, behind Davis, who had 11 of her 22 points in the first ten minutes of action.
The Black and Gold extended their lead to as many as 12 in the second quarter, but a 16-1 run over the final 5:25 of the half saw the Mean Green go into locker room with a 38-34 advantage.
UNT came out firing in the third, going up by as many as 10, before Southern Miss answered with a run of their own to cut the Mean Green lead back to four going into the final quarter.
Noble took over in the final quarter, hitting field goals on four of five possessions down the floor to help the Mean Green seal the win.
Southern Miss returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Houston to take on Rice at the Tudor Fieldhouse. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. CT.
